Kevin’s adrenaline rushed as he thought through his options. He couldn’t radio Joseph, and if he shouted to his friend, he might frighten the unknown figure away, losing the chance to discover what it was. Then he remembered the laser sight on his rifle. Maybe he could alert Joseph with directed flashes that would be more discreet.

It was getting close to Joseph now. Kevin reached for the switch on his laser sight as he zeroed his scope on a small mound near his friend. Joseph jerked back as a green dot illuminated the snow in front of him. The figure noticed Joseph’s sudden movement and bounded towards him with amazing speed. Joseph rolled back and tried to lift his rifle, but instead slid in the snow and awkwardly tumbled against a tree. Before he could reorient himself, the figure rose up and leapt an inhuman distance through the air. As it landed on Joseph, Kevin fired.
